How do I pay for the sessions?

Consultation fees need to be paid in full on the day of your appointment.

You can pay with debit/credit card, American Express or cash. Your card can be stored on file with Halaxy, which is the office software we use and debited after your sessions. For no-shows where no notification has been given, there will be a 100% cancellation fee. Unfortunately rebates or third party payments (e.g. Medicare, Workcover, insurance etc.) can not be claimed for missed appointments.

Referral.

Do I need a referral?

No you don’t need a referral to book an appointment. If you want to receive a rebate from Medicare you will need a referral and a valid Mental Health Care Plan from your GP.

What is a Mental Health Care Plan?

In order to get the Medicare Rebate when you see a psychologist, you will need to get a mental health care plan from your GP. If you wish to access the rebate you will need to get your MHCP before your first visit.

You can read more about it here: https://www.health.qld.gov.au/newsroom/features/what-is-a-mental-health-care-plan-and-how-do-I-get-one

Can I use my Mental Health Care Plan to see a different psychologist?

Yes. Mental Health Care Plans are transferrable. If your current Mental Health Care Plan was issued with the name of a clinic or psychologist different to the one you wish to see, that is OK. Alternatively, you can ask your GP to reissue your referral with your new psychologist’s name.

Therapy process.

How many sessions will I need?

In your first session, we will be discussing a treatment plan for you depending on your needs, your level of distress and the type of funding you have/ financial situation. Through Medicare you are able to access up to 10 sessions per year with a rebate of $141.85.

Having a collaborative and open discussion with your psychologist will help you both work out the session frequency and duration that best fits your needs, and this is something that can be reviewed as the treatment progresses.

It will also depend on the type of treatment we decide on. Some of the treatment modalities benefit from less frequent sessions with homework in between while others might be more efficient with more frequent sessions.

How often do I need to have sessions?

Some clients come in weekly or several times per week while others go biweekly, monthly or less. It is quite typical to come in more frequently at the start of treatment and then space it more out towards the end of your treatment process in order to maintain any gains you might have had from your therapy or to offer support over time.

What can I expect from the first session?

Attending your first session with a psychologist can be daunting, and it is very normal to feel nervous and even anxious about doing so. Your psychologist will be aware of this, and will ensure as smooth and comfortable a process for you as possible.

In the first session, we will typically be focusing on getting an understanding of your history/background and what has prompted you to seek psychological support. To do this, we may ask you a number of questions about your life (e.g., family and history) and overall mental health experiences, and may ask you to fill out some questionnaires.

Your psychologist is also there to answer any questions you might have about what to expect from the course of treatment, confidentiality, and modes of treatment available (i.e. in person or telehealth)

How can I get the most out of therapy?

Being an active participant in your sessions and taking an open and collaborative approach with your psychologist is the best way to get the most out of your sessions.

Some treatment approaches will require you to do some homework between sessions, or practice skills and tools discussed in sessions. Writing a few notes on these experiences between sessions and bringing them in to explore is a useful way to support the transfer of what happens in sessions to your outside world.

Type of clients.

Do you see children?

No, I work with adults and older teenagers (16+)

Do you accept Private Health?

Yes, depending on your plan, you may be eligible to receive rebates from your Private Health Fund. You will need to pay for your session up front but will get a receipt to claim with your Health Fund.

What types of therapy do you offer?

I offer a range of evidence-based treatments. I often take an eclectic approach, meaning I use elements from different approaches in order to create the best possible outcome for you as a client.

The modalities I have the most experience with and use most frequently is:
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
Mindfulness Based Interventions (MBSR/MBCT/ACT)

You can read more about these different intervention under the “Therapies” section on this website.

Reports.

Do you write court reports?

No, we don’t write court reports, medico-legal or forensic reports.

Any other written reports will normally be charged at the hourly rate ($260) or according to third party funders’ fee schedules (e.g.Workcover/DVA etc.).
